What is Xarelto?
Why are Janssen and Bayer being sued?
The Prescription drug Xarelto is a blood thinner prescribed to help prevent blood clots. Janssen Pharmaceutical is the company that manufactures the blood thinner. Bayer Healthcare co-markets the drug with Janssen. Both have been named in various lawsuits.
Why are Janssen and Bayer being sued?
The lawsuit arises out of accusations that the companies failed to adequately warn of the risks associated with taking Xarelto. The biggest risk is severe internal bleeding for which there is currently no known cure. Ultimately, a patient could die because of it.
The lawsuit claims that adequate warning would have resulted in the drug Warafin being prescribed. Warafin may still cause internal bleeding, but this problem may be treated by giving the patient high doses of Vitamin K.
I take Xarelto, what should I do?
You should immediately stop participating in any activity that might result in injury, even an injury as innocuous as a bruise or a cut. If, despite your best effort, you get injured call your doctor immediately. If you see bruising or bleeding, swelling in your limbs, or you experience confusion, changes in vision, headaches, unexplained dizziness or weakness, or severe headaches, you might be at risk and should contact your doctor.
Basically, if you experience anything abnormal, become pregnant,or plan any surgical procedure contact your doctor. If you have any doubt, play it safe and call your doctor.
Is Xarelto being recalled?
No. Litigation involving drug companies is a lengthy process. All Xarelto lawsuits are in their early stages and investigations into these accusations are not complete. It will take years of investigation and legal proceedings, thousands of hours of work by attorneys, and millions of dollars before the investigation will be complete.
